(An industrial cooperative of adult deaf persons)
Traditionally, organizations of disabled persons (DPOs) devote themselves to
lobbying for establishing their rights. Our story is different. In the mid-eighties PKK felt a strong need to form an association of its ex-students to initiate a dialogue about their employment, future plans and aspirations. Several meetings and discussion led to the creation of a co-operative society to organize economic activities for their self- employment. PKK provided the necessary equipment and machinery. Thus, Hooghly Badhir Mudran Samabay Samity Ltd (HBMSSL) was formed in 1987. It is an industrial co-operative society of ex-students of PKK. It made no profit in the initial years. Business turnover began rising from the mid-nineties, generating both profits and employment opportunities. At present, 12 boys are working in the printing unit and 14 girls in the stitching unit.
